I use Help 'N Doc at http://www.helpndoc.com/. They have a "free for
personal use" version, as well as two reasonably priced pay versions.

Eric

I tried this tool some time ago and it wouldn't run unless I was connected
to the Internet and I allowed the application access through the firewall,
so there was no way I was going to use it.

Has this changed recently?

The current version (2.0.0.28 which I downloaded yesterday) certainly requests an
internet connection the first time you run it. I suspect that's to show the RSS
news on the welcome screen. It also crashed with a memory error the first time I
exited the program, but seems ok today although I've not actually used it in anger
yet.

Five errors during application start (undefined jQuery), then a Welcome
screen stating that I must be connected to the internet and I must allow
access through the firewall.  That's how I remember it from last time - not
useable.  Pity - seems from the website blurb that it might be an
interesting product.

Remove, reinstall and run.  Exactly the same response - errors in Jquery
script.  It cannot cope with a machine not connected to the internet.  It
seems from the details of the error that is is trying to do some monitoring
of file access by file type.   I am not going to use software that attempts
to monitor my internet activity, especially as there is no mention in the
documentation.

I'm sure there's a dozen worthy ones, but I second the recommendation
for Help 'N' Doc. You can try out the free version before you commit
to a paid one.

I just downloaded it, and am giving it a try. It wouldn't compile CHM files,
saying I didn't have the MS help authorizing software. So I downloaded and
installed it from the link given, at the end of which it said I already had
a newer version installed. HelpNDoc still didn't want to compile, so I
pointed it to the hhc.exe I installed. Compiling my 2 page test project then
completely locked up my computer.  :-(

Aren't you glad it was free, then? (-:

Definitely. Usually, you pay through the nose for software to lock up your
computer!  ;-)

Something must have gotten mucked up with the Windows HTML Help Compiler.
After rebooting my PC, HelpNDoc will compile a CHM file, but it only
consists of missing links. Don't have time to mess with it now, but guess
I'll have to research how to get the thing corrected.

Try Help Maker. It's free and does all flavours of help file.
Here's the link:-

http://www.vizacc.com/

Takes a little bit of getting used to but is basically WSIWYG.

It works well for me.
