Isn't there some adage about trains wrecks, and watching them, or something?
Well, it applies here.  <g>

I gave it away too soon, again(!), didn't I? <g>

Not quite true, though.  I'm still needing bits for QB1 to complete the collection.

I've still got the set of floppies here. - Used them to install it on a W98
machine last year to update a legacy program, so they're still ok!

Oh man, you're playing with fire!  I actually went through my old floppy filing
cases a few years ago, and burned VFDs of all that mattered using WinImage.  Sadly,
about 3-5% were totally unreadable after 20-odd years sitting on the shelf.

I should have added that I would have used my backup copies (on CD) if I'd found
any dead floppies, but I thought I'd see if they were still ok first! :^)

Hmm, funny thing you *mentioned* it. I still have, from my first homebuilt
development system for CDP180X, a Pertec dual 8" SCSI drive. It's a huge 19"
rackmount dev. weight 32 kg!!! At the time it cost me converted to today
value some 150' SEK, about $15000!

For the 5.25 I have my first PC clone. 4.77 MHz, extended to 640 kB RAM and
a later mounted 10 MB HD. At the time the HD was so large I split it into 2
partitions. :))

Woww, nostalgia flows...

My first development system was an Intel ISIS II which had been expanded to 32K of RAM. It
handled both the original 8080 and the new 8085 processors.

The dual 8" floppy cabinet was huge. It was some sort of cast metal and weighed a ton.

8" floppies, sheer luxury, I've still got something I wrote in the
pre-microprocessor days when I was a school kid which is on punched tape
We had access to a Varian V70 minicomputer at the local college - lovely
machine, user access was on ASR33 teletypes, each user had up to 8k of core
and I mean "core", the memory was ferrite beads. The next machine I used was
a IBM 1130 which was a punched card batch process machine - horrible. After
that I made a Zilog Z80 based machine with a 8" drive and a staggering 5k
ram (5 x 9 1k chips all hand soldered) and a monitor which was a portable
B+W TV and I connected the output from the computer directly to the gun on
the TV, scary!

I would say this qualifies you for the Geek of the Board award.  :-)

I could send him a box of unused punch-tape if he still have a
punch-writer/reader. ;)

Hmmm, guess I have to mount my old 5.25 floppy and see what's on them
diskettes, if anything is still readable. ;)

That's a pretty good trick, these days.  You have to get up in the attic to find a
machine old enough to still support one of those drives.  (I know, I tried salvaging
what were still on my old floppies a few years ago!)  And, although it's not too
hard to find a 3.5" external floppy drive, I never could find a 5.25" external.

Those are just for Apples, no?  And they're SCSI, not USB.  :-(

Picky, picky!  :P

Doesn't seem like they make a 5.25 usb drive.  BUT...I did find this:
http://www.usb-port.com/bf660.html

SCSI to USB adapter.

OMG!  $84?!?!?  <LOL>  I think I'd rather put that towards a Mac! <vbg>

Well, no one said entertaining nostalgia would be cheap.  <g>

I was amazed to see how big a demand there was for external 5.25 floppy
drives out there (lots of requests on newsgroups and the like).  I would how
hard it would be to put one together from an old internal drive and make it
an external USB drive?  It wouldn't be the prettiest piece of hardware, but
very possible I would imagine.

I'm sure a guy could make a nice little side income, or at least pay for a few
dinners out <g>, selling those.  Doesn't seem to be *any* out there.

I went through that just about a year or so ago.  I had a bunch of stuff on
5.25 floppies. With virtualization now an easy thing to do (via Virtual PC
from MS and products from other vendors), I thought it'd be interesting to
revisit some of those old programs and games.  I had a bunch of Sierra games
and I've always liked, and still do, the Infocom text games.  Anyone
remember Leather Goddesses of Phobos?
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather_Goddesses_of_Phobos). Classic!  First
I tried connecting the 5.25 drive to a relatively newer PC (about 4 years
old). Drive wouldn't work with it even though the BIOS supposedly had
"support" for a 5.25 drive (the BIOS listed a 1.2 MB 5.25 floppy but the
computer wouldn't boot with that selected) . So, I ended up having to dig
out an even older computer (probably about 10 years old) and copy all the
5.25 disks to 3.5 disks. I was kinda amazed that both this old computer and
the 5.25 drive still worked. But I did get all those 5.25 disks copied onto
3.5 disks. Of course, now it's even harder to find a computer that comes
with a 3.5 floppy disk drive, so I probably should have copied everything to
the hard drive or a CD/DVD. Oh well. That'll give me something else to do
when the time comes.  <g>

'zactly what I was thinking, yeah!

Heh, now you've done it.  You're officially unelectable as of that post.  ;-)

That's pretty much what I did.  I resurrected an old P5/200 and got Win95 running on
it.  It still had both sizes of floppies, and they both worked!  (I think it was the
2nd or 3rd swap that I finally got the 5.25 going, though.)

There ya go.  I used WinImage to build VFDs of each floppy as I read them -- both
sizes.  They can be dragged right into a VM, now, and it's as if they were plugged
into the floppy.
