There was a lot of talk about SP6 being very buggy (creating more bugs than
it fixed) when it first came out.

I can just tell you about my own experiences.

I have VB6 installed on a lot of virtual machines and put SP6 on all of
those. The VMs are to semi-mimic our client's environments (IOW, I install
the same version of Windows with the same service pack and updates, install
as much as I can of the same software they'll have installed, etc.).  So,
each of the VMs I have do differ to some degree.  I've never encountered any
problems in VB6 apps written for these clients due to having VB6 SP6.

The one thing that I *definately* recommend (and this is if you go with SP5
or SP6) is to get the Common Controls update if you use any of the Common
Controls in your app. This update was released after SP6 and contains some
fixes with certain controls.  You can download it from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=25437d98-51d0-41c1-bb14-64662f5f62fe&displaylang=en

(and make sure you distribute these updated versions with your app;
otherwise, it's pointless).

What's defective about it? If you're going to make that claim, provide
details as to why.

We covered this in a thread here a few weeks ago.  There is also some
specific discussion of one known bug at:
