I see Microsoft is alread beta testing the new System 7, and is apparently
admitting that Vista was a failure?

Does anyone know if vb6 applications will now finally fall over?

Indications here, and with my testing, indicates most any VB6 app that runs
on Vista will run on Win7.

I'd suspect the same, as Windows7 is *really* Vista SP3.

I know. Which makes me wonder just how different Windows7 will be (under the
hood, not what you see on the monitor). I'm afraid it will mostly be a case
of improved hype and different looks. ;-)

Different looks ? No. It looks exactly like Vista. Exactly.

I've d/l'd the beta and have installed in a VirtualBox VM using 1 gig RAM
and 128M for video memory.

Honestly, I was initially floored by how well it runs in the VM. I'm
guessing it would have to run better with a native install. Of course, I
haven't done much with it, installing s/w wise, so who knows how it will
react over time.

I've also an install of Ubuntu Linux in a VM as well (which is still a
fairly default install and allotted the same resources). My perception is
that the 'speed' of both are very similar. FF and TB open in about the
same time, browsing seems similar, I haven't done much more. I did
install Linux's version of SuperFetch, called Preload, so who knows.

But.....it's *got* to be better than Vista !!!!

It's noticeably faster on identical hardware, uses less memory, and UAC
has been tweaked to be less intrusive.  My son has a laptop that was
pretty much unusable with Vista, but is quite responsive with the
Windows 7 beta.

There's an interesting piece about that here:

c.ars

Apparently MS is still experimenting with just how
intrusive to be, and with just how UAC will work in
Win7.

My VB6 app runs absolutely fine on Windows 7 Beta using
registration-free COM (i.e. a manifest file). It uses four standard MS
OCXs, one third-party OCX, two third-party VB6 DLLs and one
third-party DLL written in C/C++. I've also had it running off a USB
memory stick that I can simply plug into XP or Windows 7 - no
installation! Later today I'm going to try burning the folder to a
CD-ROM, then specifying the writable .ini file (the only file the app
needs to write to) via a Command$ string in the shortcut. An Ultimate
end to DLL Hell. Thanks, Microsoft! When I think of the dozens of apps
I've fought shy of releasing because of it, it's like falling in love
for the first time all over again.
