Welp, I just got me a new lappy with Vista Ultimate.  After almost a day of
exploring, all I can say is: wow.  And that the UAS (or whatever it's
called) is a *real* PITA!!!  And if you turn it off, the bloody OS is
constantly telling you are wrong for turning it off and you should turn it
back on.

It's a shame it doesn't operate more like ZoneAlarm and remember my actions
so I don't have to answer it everytime I do the same thing over and over
again.

Aero is pretty nice once you get used to the flashiness of it all.  When XP
came out I turned Luna off so it would look more like Classic Windows...nice
I can do the same thing in Vista (call me old fashioned).

Anyways, I know...who cares, off topic...but I had to tell someone since I
ain't got no friends in real life.  ;-)

Yes. I gave up trying to live with it very quickly. If I get burned by a
virus, I get burned. But I won't....

You can make it stop complaining about it. I'm not running Vista at the
moment so I can't give you specifics, but I believe it's in the Security
Center (or whatever it's called) if you dig around. Of course, telling
Windows to stop bitching about it is "not recommended." Satisfying, though,
especially because all through the betas you COULDN'T make it stop.

"What's more, Microsoft recently made it clear that it doesn't consider UAC
a security feature, since it has deliberately left particular holes in the
system for ease of use. That means bugs in UAC aren't security flaws,
Microsoft says."

Thus negating the security gained by UAC.

It certainly is a PITA for those of use who perform admin
functions a lot but really, I've learned to live with it.

I deliberately left it on to see if I could get used to it
or not.

Of the people I know in real life they all hated Vista from
the start and now say they love it. UAC is still a matter
for debate though :-)

I must admit, I am really starting to get into Vista.  I'm not ready to put
it on my main box, but so far aafter much tweaking and hacking, I've got it
set up to do pretty much what I want it to do, much to MS's dismay.
Basically, I have my logon, for me to fool around with, and a log on with
least privlidges for programming purposes.  It's woking out nice.

Still, it would be nice is MS gave us an option to add programs or a "don't
show this again for this program" to the UAC.  Yes, I understand it defeats
the purpose of security...but perhaps the trade off would be to only put
that option on the UAC prompt for admins who know exactly what they are
getting themselves into, vesus the agverage Joe user who does not.  One of
the things I've learned about designing programs over the years is that
folks like options...and choices.  MS kinda tied our hands by giving us the
choice to turn UAC off on a global basis, versus user by user.  But I'll
save the details of that debate for the Vista groups.  ;-)

The point is most home users have one account and it's
admin. UAC is there to protect them. If you allow what you
propose then those users will do the same thing and thus
defat UAC - however, since you can just switch UAC of
anyway.

I guess the moral of the story is that you just can't
protect users from themselves :-)

No ... the moral of the story is you can't just protect users from themselves.
Instead, you should design systems so that users are protected by the design.

Though for windows, that cat has long ago left the bag, grown up, and had
several litters of kittens and grand-kittens already.

Maybe not in your neighborhood... but.... you'd be surprised.

The median age of folks in my neighborhood is about 80.  My refusal to get a
haircut has already labeled me as a "punk".

I love it.  ;-)

1989 was my last haircut (and no, I'm not bald)

Congratulations on your new Lappy Kevin, Frankly I could care less about
it. What I do care about is the five weeks I have been tring to get my
wav man to work on my new Tower, monitor and my all in one, on NEW HP

I have done everything I have been told to do.

1.Name
2.serial number 10792351
3. Which version I was using
4 if I knew my registration number I wouldn't be contacting
you. That invalid registration number is (24427795)

What I have done is delete all former versions of wavman and installed
the 11.0 version. The problem now is that thirty day free trial has
expired, and won't let me install the new version.

Kevin, I have bee a loyal customer since 1996, I can't count the nmber
of customers I have sent to you. They all contact me back, thanking me
for turning them onto wav man.

I registered for the 11.0 atabout 8:30, this morning and I still can't
register my copy of wav man.

Sincerely,

Darrell Williams
